How Do I Use a Captive Bead Ring?
Captive Bead Rings (also known as CBRs or Ball Closure Rings) are a classic style of body jewellery. Unlike threaded jewellery, the ball isn't screwed into place—it is held securely between the ends of the ring using spring tension.
If you've never used one before, don't worry! They can be a little tricky at first, but once you've mastered the technique they're easy to use.
Removing the Ball
Hold the ring securely with one hand and gently remove the ball by easing one side out first, rather than trying to pull it directly away from the ring.
Some larger or heavier gauge rings may require jewellery pliers, but most standard sizes can be opened by hand.
Inserting the Ring
Once the ball has been removed, carefully guide the ring through your healed piercing.
If you need a little extra room, gently twist (torque) the ring open rather than pulling the ends apart. Twisting helps maintain the ring's circular shape and makes it much easier to realign the bead afterwards.
Replacing the Ball
The captive bead has a small indentation on each side where the ring sits.
Position one side of the bead onto one end of the ring, then gently press the opposite side into place until the bead clicks securely between the two ends.
Once fitted correctly, the bead should sit firmly in place while still being able to rotate slightly within the ring.
Need a Visual Guide?
Captive bead rings are much easier to understand when you see them in action. We recommend watching this short video tutorial before attempting to change your jewellery:

Still Having Trouble?
If you're finding your captive bead ring difficult to open, close or reassemble, don't force it. Excessive bending can distort the shape of the ring and prevent the bead from fitting securely.
