How Do I Change My Belly Ring?

Changing your belly ring is simple once your piercing has fully healed. If your piercing is new, we recommend waiting until it has completely healed or having your jewellery changed by a professional piercer.

Before You Begin

  • Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water.
  • Clean your jewellery if needed.
  • Work in a well-lit area, preferably over a towel or soft surface in case you drop any small parts.

Removing Your Belly Ring

Most belly bars unscrew by turning the top ball anti-clockwise (left) while holding the bar securely with your other hand.
Once the ball has been removed, gently slide the bar out through the piercing.
If your jewellery feels tight or won't unscrew, avoid forcing it. Wearing a pair of disposable gloves can provide extra grip, or a rubber jar opener can also help.

Inserting Your New Belly Ring

Ensure your new jewellery is clean before inserting it.
Gently guide the curved bar through your piercing from the bottom until it sits comfortably. Screw the top ball or decorative end on by turning it clockwise (right) until it is finger tight.
There's no need to overtighten the ball—just make sure it's secure before wearing.

If You're Having Trouble

If the jewellery won't pass through easily, don't force it. Your piercing may have shrunk slightly or become irritated.
Applying a small amount of sterile saline or a water-based lubricant can help the jewellery glide through more comfortably.
If your piercing has partially closed or you're experiencing pain, swelling or bleeding, it's best to seek advice from a professional piercer rather than trying to force the jewellery back in.

A Few Helpful Tips

  • Always check that the ball is securely tightened after changing your jewellery.
  • It's a good idea to check threaded jewellery every few days, as normal movement can gradually loosen the ball.
  • If you're changing to a different bar length or gauge, make sure the size is suitable for your piercing. Our Body Jewellery Size Guide can help if you're unsure.
